Indian woman cricketer Shafali Verma has voiced her belief that the Indian men’s cricket team will emerge victorious in the highly anticipated Asia Cup 2023, set to commence on August 30 across Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The spirited declaration came during an event in Mumbai, where Shafali Verma shared her insights with ANI. Expressing her optimism, Verma stated, “The team looks very strong. All those who were missing owing to injuries are making a comeback. So, I think Team India has become very strong. So, I think they will win.” The confident sentiment follows India’s recent announcement of their 17-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup.
In addition to her words of encouragement for the Asia Cup, Shafali Verma extended her well-wishes for the Indian cricket team’s success in the upcoming World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to take place in India starting from October 5.
Addressing the recent controversy surrounding Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s interaction with umpires during the match against Bangladesh, Verma offered her perspective on the matter. “I can’t say about Harmanpreet Kaur….but as a team, we are always just thinking of doing well for the Indian team, for our country. Sometimes we will go up or down. But we can work hard anytime so we are just believing in working hard. That is what we are thinking,” Verma stated.
During the Dhaka One-Day International (ODI), Harmanpreet Kaur expressed her discontent with the umpiring decisions by striking the stumps with her bat and subsequently criticized the umpiring during the post-match presentation. As a consequence, Kaur incurred three demerit points for “showing dissent at an umpiring decision” and another for “public criticism” of match officials, in addition to fines amounting to 50 percent and 25 percent of her match fee for the two violations.
Shafali Verma’s positive outlook on India’s prospects in the Asia Cup 2023 resonates with the nation’s fervor for cricket. As the tournament draws near, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await to witness the Indian team’s performance on the global stage.
