The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held a Special General Meeting (SGM) on May 27 in Ahmedabad to address the criticism of facilities at various stadiums across the country. The members decided to form a committee to explore ways to sanction grants for various stadiums in need of upgrades. The BCCI plans to complete the upgrades before the World Cup in October-November. The committee’s formation is expected to be announced after the final of the IPL on Sunday.
Additionally, the BCCI plans to form a working group for the World Cup, with each office-bearer given charge of a venue and responsible for it. The venues for the World Cup will be announced during the World Test Championship final in London, with the schedule to be disclosed at a media event. The BCCI is looking at all the metros as potential venues for the tournament.
However, the future of the Asia Cup 2023 remains uncertain. The venue(s) will be decided after a meeting of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Hosts Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has proposed a hybrid model for the continental championship with Pakistan and UAE as venues, but it has not found acceptance from the members. The Asia Cup is tentatively scheduled for September, and the future of the tournament will be decided after the ACC meeting.
The BCCI also plans to hold a series against Afghanistan before the World Cup but has not confirmed the dates. Initially, it was proposed to be staged in June-end, sandwiching the three ODIs between the WTC final and the West Indies series (in July-August), but those dates are unlikely to be considered.
The BCCI is also looking at a window for organizing the second edition of the Women’s T20 Challenge (WPL) before March 2024. The shortlist of applicants for the women’s head coach has already been done, and the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will meet to decide accordingly. The BCCI may have a new women’s team head coach before the Bangladesh series.
