In an exciting turn of events, Indian batter Jemimah Rodrigues has signed a last-minute deal to play for the Northern Superchargers in the upcoming Hundred tournament in England. Rodrigues will be stepping in as a replacement for Australia’s Heather Graham.
The 22-year-old Rodrigues is no stranger to The Hundred, having been among the leading run-scorers in the inaugural season of the tournament. Unfortunately, she missed a significant part of last year’s competition due to a wrist injury. Despite the Northern Superchargers initially choosing not to retain her ahead of this year’s draft in March, they were able to bring her back as an injury replacement.
This recent development comes on the heels of Australia’s decision to withdraw two of their star players, Alyssa Healy and Ellyse Perry, from the tournament. The duo suffered injuries during Australia’s second ODI against Ireland, prompting their return to Australia.
With Rodrigues joining the Northern Superchargers, she becomes the fourth Indian player to feature in this year’s edition of The Hundred. India captain Harmanpreet Kaur is set to play for Trent Rockets, while India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana will represent Southern Brave. Additionally, the young wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh will take the field for London Spirit.
Expressing her excitement about returning to The Hundred, Rodrigues stated, “I’m so excited to be back in The Hundred. It’s a world-class competition, and I’ve had so much fun taking part in it previously.” She also expressed her disappointment at having to withdraw last year due to injury and is thrilled to be back on the field at Headingley, a brilliant ground with passionate fans.
Earlier this year, Rodrigues had a decent run as the vice-captain of the Delhi Capitals in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). However, it was her match-winning all-round performance against Bangladesh, where she scored 86 runs and took 4 wickets for just 3 runs, that truly showcased her talent and potential.
As The Hundred kicks off on August 1 and runs until August 27, fans eagerly anticipate witnessing Rodrigues and other star players from around the world showcasing their skills and bringing their best to the highly competitive tournament. With the addition of Rodrigues to the Northern Superchargers, the team’s prospects have undoubtedly been bolstered, and cricket enthusiasts are eager to see her in action once again on the grand stage of The Hundred.
