Liverpool Football Club is on the verge of securing the signature of RB Leipzig midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai in a deal worth £60.1 million. The Premier League giants have informed Leipzig that they will activate the player’s release clause, paving the way for the Hungarian sensation to make his move to Anfield.
Szoboszlai, 22, made a significant impact for Leipzig last season, scoring six goals and providing eight assists in 31 Bundesliga appearances. His contributions were instrumental in helping Leipzig finish third in the league and clinch the German Cup. Liverpool’s interest in the attacking midfielder has been evident, and a meeting has already taken place between the player’s representatives and the club.
The release clause in Szoboszlai’s contract, which has attracted attention from other clubs such as Newcastle United, expires on Friday. Liverpool are determined to secure his services and bolster their midfield options after the departures of James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer. Manager Jurgen Klopp is keen to reinforce the squad and believes that Szoboszlai’s skill set will be a valuable addition.
Since joining RB Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2021, Szoboszlai has showcased his immense talent, scoring 20 goals and providing 21 assists in 91 appearances. His versatility, ability to create chances, and eye for goal make him an exciting prospect for Liverpool. Notably, he played a crucial role in Leipzig’s triumph in the German Cup final, scoring in their 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt.
Liverpool has already made moves in the transfer market this summer, securing the signing of Argentina international Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton for £35 million. However, the acquisition of Szoboszlai would be a significant statement of intent from the club, highlighting their ambition to compete at the highest level. Klopp is determined to build a formidable squad capable of challenging for domestic and European honors.
In a separate development, Liverpool forward Fabio Carvalho has joined RB Leipzig on a season-long loan. The 20-year-old, who arrived at Anfield from Fulham last summer, will continue his development and gain valuable experience in Germany. Carvalho made 21 appearances for Liverpool last season, scoring three goals, and the loan move will provide him with the opportunity to further hone his skills.
