Novak Djokovic, the renowned Serbian tennis legend, has been the talk of the tennis world once again, but this time not for his on-court triumphs. Recent comments made by his father, Srdjan Djokovic, have sparked discussions about the potential timing of Djokovic’s retirement from the sport.
During the premiere of the documentary “Novak Djokovic – Untold Stories,” Srdjan Djokovic opened up about his hopes for his son’s future in tennis. He revealed that he envisions Novak considering retirement in 2024. The elder Djokovic expressed his desire for his son to be celebrated and recognized for his remarkable achievements even after stepping away from the tennis world. Although Srdjan acknowledged that it is not yet the end of Novak’s illustrious career, he hinted that the decision might be around a year and a half away.
Srdjan Djokovic shed light on his son’s perspective, stating that Novak feels he had already achieved his dreams seven or eight years ago. This implies that tennis is only one facet of his life, and he has other aspirations beyond the sport. “Tennis is just a part of his life, not all of it,” the senior Djokovic remarked.
Dijana Djokovic, Novak’s mother, also shared her thoughts on her son’s potential retirement. She suggested that Novak could continue on the circuit for another year or two if he chooses to do so. However, she emphasized that the ultimate decision lies solely with Novak himself. Dijana praised her son’s remarkable career and achievements, stating that he has accomplished so much that he can decide to step back from tennis whenever he wishes.
Recently, Djokovic withdrew from the National Bank Open, the only Canadian stop on the ATP Tour schedule. He cited fatigue as the reason for his decision, choosing to take some additional rest after his recent loss to Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the Wimbledon 2023 final. The 36-year-old, 23-time Grand Slam champion was scheduled to commence his hard-court preparations for the upcoming US Open after his hard-fought five-set final at Wimbledon.
“I have always enjoyed my time in Canada, but after speaking with my team, we believe this is the right decision to take,” Djokovic stated as he confirmed his withdrawal from the tournament.
As the tennis world eagerly awaits the future decisions of the legendary Novak Djokovic, fans and critics alike continue to admire his accomplishments and eagerly anticipate his next moves both on and off the court.
