In an unexpected turn of events, Suryakumar Yadav, the dynamic Mumbai batsman, took to the field in the first ODI against West Indies wearing Sanju Samson’s jersey, leaving cricket enthusiasts puzzled. The reason behind this curious exchange was a last-minute jersey size issue and a delay in the arrival of a new one, causing Yadav to improvise and seek help from his teammate.
On the eve of the match, Yadav informed the team management about the predicament he faced with his jersey size. Despite managing to complete a photo shoot with the initially provided jersey, he urgently requested a change to his usual ‘large’ size. However, the match day jersey handed to him turned out to be of ‘medium’ size, leaving Yadav with no choice but to find an alternative solution.
As fate would have it, Sanju Samson, who wasn’t selected to play the game, became the inadvertent savior for Yadav. Seeing the urgency of the situation and with a generous spirit, Samson handed over his jersey to Yadav, allowing him to take the field without any further delays.
Under normal circumstances, players are not allowed to tape over the names printed on the back of their jerseys. Consequently, Yadav had no option but to don Samson’s jersey during the match. The Indian team managed to secure victory in the first ODI, defeating West Indies by five wickets.
A source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shed light on the situation, stating, “There was some size issue with his jersey. We were informed about it two days before the game. He will receive his new jersey after the second ODI, as the BCCI has shipped it with the Indian team players selected for the T20 series. Until then, he will be wearing his teammate’s jersey while playing.”
This peculiar incident is not an isolated one, as a few other players also faced similar size issues with their jerseys. However, the management assures that replacements will be provided soon, ensuring the players can focus on their game without any distractions.
The Indian team recently joined forces with Adidas as their new kit sponsor, starting from this season, while Dream11 secured the esteemed position of being the Indian team’s lead sponsor.
Cricket fans are now eagerly awaiting the second ODI on Saturday, curious to witness Suryakumar Yadav donning his own jersey and continuing to mesmerize the world with his incredible batting prowess.
