In a heart-wrenching incident, Copparam Shreyas Hareesh, a 13-year-old motorcycle racing prodigy from Bengaluru, tragically lost his life following a crash during the third round of the MRF MMSC FMSCI Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship 2023 at the Madras International Circuit near Chennai on Saturday.
Born on July 26, 2010, Shreyas was a student at Kensri School in Bengaluru and was hailed as a rising star in the racing world. He had already achieved numerous successes at the national level, including securing victory in four consecutive races while competing in the Rookie category of the Petronas TVS One-Make Championship this season. His exceptional talent earned him accolades and recognition, setting him on a promising path in the racing arena.
In May of this year, Shreyas made waves in the MiniGP races in Spain, delivering impressive performances and finishing fifth and fourth in the two races. His success in MiniGP India had earned him the opportunity to represent CRA Motorsports in the 250cc category (Group B) at the upcoming MSBK Championship 2023, scheduled to take place at Sepang Circuit, Malaysia, in August.
The tragic incident occurred during the rookie race at the Madras International Circuit, where Shreyas was participating from pole position. Exiting Turn-1, he encountered a devastating crash that resulted in a grievous head injury. Despite immediate medical attention provided on the spot and prompt transportation to a nearby hospital in a trauma care ambulance stationed at the track, the young racer was declared brought dead.
The Motorsports Club of Chennai (MMSC) president, Ajit Thomas, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Shreyas as an incredibly talented rider with a bright future ahead. In light of the tragedy, the MMSC made the difficult decision to cancel the rest of the weekend’s racing program as a mark of respect for the young talent.
The entire racing community mourns the loss of this young talent, and heartfelt condolences pour in from all corners to support Shreyas’ grieving family during this difficult time. His passing serves as a poignant reminder of the risks involved in the sport, and the racing fraternity comes together to honor the memory of a young rider who had dreams of achieving greatness on the track.
