Serving as the Director of Cricket at Delhi Capitals (DC), Ganguly attended the auction where the franchise secured the services of Australia’s Annabel Sutherland.
Reflecting on the evolution of women’s cricket, Ganguly expressed his belief that the progress made by the women’s team in India since 2019 might even surpass that of their male counterparts. Comparing it to the transformative impact of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on global cricket, Ganguly highlighted the substantial strides made by women’s cricket in recent years.
“The progress the women’s cricket in India has made since 2019 is, perhaps, more than the men’s team. The men’s team has always been very good. But from where the women’s team was to where they went — from winning the Asia Cup, the way they played in the World Cups. They were the best team in the Commonwealth Games (runners-up in 2022),” Ganguly stated.
Acknowledging the remarkable performances of players like Harmanpreet, Smriti, Richa, Jemimah, and Shafali, Ganguly emphasized the impressive development witnessed in women’s cricket. He commended the emergence of talents like Renuka Singh Thakur, addressing the concerns about the next seamer following Jhulan Goswami’s retirement.
Ganguly also discussed DC’s strategic signings for the upcoming season, welcoming players like Ashwani Kumari, a hard-hitting batter and bowler, and the crucial acquisition of Annabel Sutherland, emphasizing the importance of these selections for the team.
In summarizing the positive trajectory of women’s cricket, Ganguly reiterated the impactful journey from where the team started to their accomplishments in various tournaments, showcasing the strength and depth of talent in Indian women’s cricket.
